The Hoba Meteorite hit the Earth about 80000 years ago and is situated about 20km west of
Grootfontein in Namibia. The meteorite is said to weigh about 60 tons and consists of a iron nickel
mixture. It measures about 2.7 x 2.7 meters across and is the largest meteorite in the world.
The gravel road that leads to the site may be accessed either via the B8 Otavi - Grootfontein road,
or the C42 Grootfontein - Tsumeb road.

The last time we visited the site of the Hoba Meteorite we were pleasantly surprised that they
had improved the facilities around the site and offered some protection of the meteorite against
vandals. The problem was that people cut off pieces of the meteorite to keep as souvenirs. The
site is easy to reach from the tar road as the gravel roads in Namibia generally are a lot better
than in South Africa. There is a small fee to pay at the entrance to the site. They have installed
some ablution facilities now and terraces down to the meteorite as well as generally cleaned the
place up around it. There are a couple of places on the meteorite where pieces have been cut off
over the years, but I would say that 98 percent of it is still untouched.
