Ai-Ais is the main resort in Namibia's Fish River Canyon. The name appropriately means "burning water" in the Nama language and was discovered in 1850. The sulphurous hot spring water bubbles out though underground rocks at about 65 degrees Celsius. The resort contains numerous camping and caravan spots. Other accommodation includes Chalet's and rooms. There is a indoor spa complex for those wanting to enjoy very hot water while the outdoor pool is somewhat cooler. A well stocked shop is situated next to the reception and there is also a restaurant serving various meals throughout the day.

We have stayed at Ai-Ais many times over the years. According to latest reports, the resort has now been extensively renovated. It's a beautiful place to stay with the dark rocks of the canyon across the river. The restaurant was always a bit of a problem and its usually better to ask what items they have on the menu, than what they don't have. It used to be relatively cheap to stay at Ai-Ais, but they have dramatically increased their prices in recent years to take advantage of foreign tourists.
