South Africa's Eastern Cape province is extremely diverse geographically.
While its north western parts are situated in the semi arid Karoo region, its eastern
parts comprising the old Transkei region are set in green rolling hills. The southern
coastal areas comprising the well known Tsitsikamma area is covered in dense rain forest.
Many parts of the interior are very mountainous rising up to over 3000m and include
the southern Drakensberg, and Sneeuberge.

A wide variety of hiking trails are available in this province. For those
that enjoy a strenuous trail in mountainous terrain with beautiful waterfalls and
indigenous forests, the Amatola trail is just the right thing. For those preferring a
hike along the coast, there is always the famous Otter Trail or the Alexandria Trail. Be
prepared for all weather conditions especially on the Amatola trail as it can get snow
in winter and it usually rains somewhere along the way.
