Gately House is situated next to East London's Queens Park Zoo overlooking the Buffalo river.
This historic house once belonged to prominent East Londoner, John Gately who built the house in 1876. John Gately played a major role in the formation of East London's Municipality, and served as mayor several times.
Gately House with its Colonial style, was declared a National Monument in 1973 and today is a museum open to the public. Most of the original furniture has been retained.

The best way to reach Gately house is via East London's Queens Park Zoo. It is situated right at the one end of it. Surrounded by large trees, its like stepping back into Victorian time. This historic house was actually occupied by Gately's last surviving child Margaret until 1966 after which the East London Museum acquired it. The inside has some very interesting furniture and ornaments from the late nineteenth century. A guide is available to visitors who point out the many interesting details about Gately House and its contents.
