The Waterkloof hiking trail is situated in the Ficksburg area of South Africa's Freestate
province. The base camp at Langesnek is the same one that is used for the Sphinx trail.
The Waterkloof trail heads off in an easterly direction towards the distant mountains. Most of
the trail on day one is fairly flat. Only towards the end is there a moderate climb up towards
the rock overhang that acts as the overnight accommodation. Small rooms have been built under
the rock overhang, as there is a tendency for strong storms to develop that blow a lot of dust
over everything.
Day two is much more hilly and takes one through some interesting scenery across and along the
sandstone formations that make up this part of the world. Along the way you may be lucky in seeing
herds of antelope such as Black Wildebeest.

The dust storms that occasionally blow into the rock overhang should not be underestimated as they
really can be very annoying. They are usually accompanied by a sharp drop in temperature. However,
the views from here are quite interesting. Watch out on day two for extremely slippery rocks if
has been raining the during the night. People have ended up with broken bones on occasion. Day
two is probably the more scenic and quite beautiful.
