Even though large tracts of South Africa's Free State province are
relatively flat consisting mainly of Maize farms, its Eastern parts include the Maluti
Mountains and parts of the Drakensberg mountain ranges. The areas around Clarens,
Golden Gate, and south towards Fouriesburg are well known for their beautiful sandstone
formations, while the area around the Royal Natal National Park contains many streams
and waterfalls originating in the Drakensberg Mountains.

It is in these regions that most of the hiking trails are located. The
sandstone formations often form rock overhangs or even small caves that are used as
overnight shelters. A good example of this is the Bald Ibis trail just outside Swinburne.
There are also tented hikes available such as the Sentinel Mont-Aux-Sources trail that
takes one right up to the top of the Drakensberg with stunning views of the Royal Natal
National Park below. There are also many day trails available.
