South Africa's Free State province is totally landlocked. Most of the
province is used for maize farming and flat. However its eastern areas bordering on
Lesotho contain parts of the Drakensberg mountain range and are very scenic. The
areas around Clarens such as Golden Gate are well known for their beautiful sandstone
formations and stunning views of the Maluti mountains, not to mention the famous Royal
Natal National park and its amphitheater.

The history of the province goes back to the end of the 18th century, but it
was not until 1824 that the first white farmers settled in the area. Its capital
Bloemfontein was founded in 1846 as a British outpost. Bloemfontein contains many
interesting historical buildings and is also home to the National Museum. The southern
parts of the province already contain a lot of Karoo vegetation and some of the small
towns in this area are also very interesting to visit.
