Hiking in South Africa's Gauteng province can be done year round but is
mostly limited to various day trails. There are short day walks in most of the provinces
Botanical Gardens such as the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens or the Walter Sisulu
National Botanical Garden. The longer trails occur in the Suikerbosrand hills around the
town of Heidelberg or along the Magaliesberg mountain range between the city of Pretoria
and the town of Rustenburg in the west.

The Suikerbosrand Mountains are mostly situated in the 13337ha
Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, and contain a number of day trails and overnight trails,
ranging in length from about 4 - 66km. Much more spectacular are the Magaliesberg
mountains with their really beautiful day trails. Most are however situated on private
land and one usually needs to contact one of the major hiking clubs in Gauteng to get
access to them.
