The Johannesburg Zoo was established in 1904 and covers 54 hectares. Its conveniently located just north of the city center close to the main M1 freeway. The zoo contains 2070 animals covering 365 species. It is also located right next door to the Museum of Military History. Have a look at the Zoo's website (link at the bottom of this page), for the latest info on feeding times of the various animals. The whole range of Africa's big 5 animals can be found here, such as the Elephant, Rhinoceros, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard. There is also a large walk-in Avery so visitors can get real close to some of the interesting birds.

It's a well established zoo with large trees and plenty of space. Especially in summer when everything is green, the zoo is a real oasis in the concrete jungle of Johannesburg. There is also a restaurant that serves light meals. The Johannesburg zoo makes for a delightful family outing and is well worth a visit.
