South Africa's Gauteng province is the smallest in the country comprising
only 1.4% if its landmass. Most of the province is situated on the so called Highveld
consisting of mainly grassland at an altitude of 1700m above sea level. Towards the north
and west the Magaliesberg mountains rise to 1852m at Nooitgedacht, while in the south the
Suikerbosrand Mountain Range rises above the surrounding grassland. These are actually
more hills than mountains.

Despite being the smallest of South Africa's provinces, Gauteng contains a
wealth of interesting places to visit. There are a number of smaller game and nature
reserves situated in the province. In addition there are some excellent museums such as
the Museum of Military History in Johannesburg. Both Pretoria and Johannesburg have
excellent zoos and then there are the South African Lipizzaners which are the only ones
that are recognized outside of Vienna.
