South Africa's Kwazulu-Natal province contains a variety of great hiking
and backpacking trails. These include lovely coastal hiking trails such as the 3 one day
Mziki trails on the eastern shores of Lake St.Lucia with accommodation in an old WW2
fort, through to trails situated on private farms in the interior of the province, such
as the Black Wildebeest backpacking trail. The famous Drakensberg mountains that rise
to over 3000m also allow for spectacular hiking and backpacking.

Some of the best hiking trails in the country are found in the Drakensberg,
or "Berg" as it is also known. These range in length from day hikes right up to the
famous three week Drakensberg Grand and Super Traverses. Accommodation is either in
caves or tents. Most game parks, lodges, and national parks, such as the Hluhluwe Umfolozi
National Park contain self walk or guided walks. The ranger guided walks can be
particularly interesting for close up game viewing.
