The Waterbuck hiking trail is situated in the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve. This reserve is about 70km north east of the town of Tzaneen in South Africa's Limpopo province. The reserve lies right next to the popular Eiland Spa Resort and the Waterback trails starting point is within waking distance of the Spa. The permit to walk the trail can be obtained at the entrance to the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve which also contains the visitors center and the Tsonga Kraal Museum and craft workshop.
This lovely nature trail is circular and 11km long. It takes one through some of the most beautiful bush the area has to offer. The trail is mostly flat and easy to walk. There is a dam and hide about a third into the trail The reserve contains a number of different game species such as kudu, waterbuck, zebra and giraffe. Allow for about 4 - 6 hours when doing the trail depending on your walking speed.

Summers can get extremely hot in this area, so take enough water with when doing the trail. Ticks can be a problem at certain times of the year. The last time we did the trail, the hide at the dam was virtually falling to pieces. However, the bush is absolutely stunning and we actually ran into a couple of giraffe along the way.
