The Prospectors hiking trail is situated in the Pilgrim's Rest area. There are various options and
number of days that one can do this hike in. e.g 2 - 5 days. The trail generally starts off in
Pilgrim's Rest at the Pilgrim's Rest hut. All the huts have Donkeys / Hot Water Boilers, and
Bunk-beds, as well as a Braai / barbecue area. If doing the five day trail, the first day is
about 12.6km long and ends at the Morgenzon hut.
Day One takes one along an old Electric Tramway line that was once used by the Transvaal
Gold Mining Estates company to transport gold bearing ore to its Reduction Works close to
Pilgrim's Rest. For the rest of Day One the trail climbs all the way up to the Morgenzon hut.
Day Two covers approximately 15.6km and takes one across the R533 that runs down Robbers
Pass past the Crystal Springs Mountain Resort and onto Pilgrim's Rest. There is a 700m climb up to
the Black Hill hut. The views from up top here are quite breathtaking!
Day Three covers 12.6km and is quite easy going involving little climbing. It takes one
through grassland, rocky areas and some indigenous forest patches until one reaches the Excelsior
overnight hut.
Day Four is another 15.7km long and takes one through plantation forests and grassland.
It is mostly flatish with a steep decline at the end to the Morgenzon hut.
Day Five takes a different route back to Pilgrim's Rest than day one, and is 8.5km long.

The various options one has on the length of the trail makes it quite popular, and there is quite
a bit of history to be seen from the early gold mining days of Pilgrim's Rest. Avoid the Easter
period though. The village becomes very crowded with tourists and bikers. The noise of the bikers
screaming down Robbers Pass towards Pilgrim's Rest is considerable and carries far, especially up
to the Black Hill hut. Also there is considerable confusion with markings on day 4 as the trail
seems to have been re-laid several times but the old markings are still found in numerous places.
