The Rooi Ivoor hiking trail is close to Steelport.
It starts with a walk on the jeep track for a long time (don't turn onto the trail of day 2!)
before it eventually turns off and heads towards the tyre ladder (there is an alternative option
available).
This tyre ladder is not too steep, it rather prevents erosion than it is for climbing. After the
tyre ladder the trail still continues to lead upwards until it reaches the top where it follows
the contour.
Here the trail has been rerouted and it goes down into the valley before ascending again just
before the Stamvrug hut.
This hut has a beautiful setting close to the ridge with great views.
As the hut is on top of the hill the second day is mainly downhill through lots of grassland and
small gorges. Further down you will see the tall Marlothii aloes that can grow up to 3m height.
There are two options back to the base camp, the shorter Marlothii trail and the longer Kudu trail.

On the Rooi Ivoor hiking trail the base camp and the overnight camp are very well equipped with
the essentials like gas cookers and hot water. The base camp even has electricity.
Although the distance from the tar road to the base camp is not very far the gravel road can get
a bit difficult to master with a normal car as it is washed out.
We would also advise not to take the road via Stoffberg/Steelport but rather via
Dullstroom/Lydenburg.
