The Salpeterkrans hiking trail is situated about 50km west of the Mpumalanga town of Lydenburg along the R577. It's a lovely backpacking trail that can be done year round.
The base camp is well equipped with hot showers, a fully equipped kitchen and large rooms with beds and mattresses in them.
Essentially the trails runs up a long valley on day one and back again on the other side on day two. Its not a strenuous hike and the scenery on both days is really beautiful from the top of the hills that run up the valley on both sides. Roossekop is the highest point before one descends steeply to the stream below which must be crossed in order to get to the overnight huts.
The overnight huts consist of three huts that are well hidden in bushes and trees. Two are for accommodation and the third one contains the ablution facilities. A number of braai facilities are also available.
Day two takes one through very interesting rocky terrain high up on the hills, before the trail does a gradual descent back to the base camp.

To get to Roossekop on day one, one must take a little detour and climb a bit higher up the mountain. Right on top there is an old Anglo Boer War shelter that acted as a lookout point and sniper point. The views from the top are quite stunning. The overnight hut contains a "Donkey or hot water boiler" for hot water, but we found it uses a lot of wood to get the water hot.
In our opinion day two is even more interesting than day one as the rocks sometimes form very weird formations.
