The Uitsoek trail is situated about 20km past the Sudwala caves in South Africa's Mpumalanga
province. Its not the easiest of hikes and covers about 30km with about half on each day. The
base-camp is well equipped with hot showers, barbecue / braai facilities and a kitchen. The first
day takes one through stretches of plantations before climbing some grass covered hills. At one
point it descends steeply into a valley before climbing out again on the other side. The last
stretch before reaching the overnight hut is also through plantations.
The overnight hut is fairly basic with water having to be fetched in a stream about 100m away. A
long drop toilet is situated also about 50m away from the building in the forest.
The second day is arguably more spectacular. What was climbed on the first day is descended again
on the second. Most of the second day runs along the bottom of a valley through dense indigenous
forest along a stream. The stream is crossed many times with the aid of small wooden bridges.
There is a beautiful waterfall along this stretch. The last few km involve climbing up some hills
before finally reaching base-camp again.

The weather in this area is very unpredictable so take plenty of rain gear along. On the first day
when exiting the plantations and climbing up the grass covered hills it can get very windy and
cold. The overnight hut has plenty of wood available for a barbecue / braai in the evening, or
just for sitting around a camp fire. The second day tends to get very long so get started early.
