South Africa's Mpumalanga province covers a wide variety of areas, starting
off with the grassland areas in the west around Witbank and Middelburg, and onward
towards the Nelspruit and Sabie areas with their extensive Eucalyptus and Pine
plantations. The eastern part towards the Lowveld and escarpment becomes quite
mountainous. Once one reaches the Lowveld, the vegetation turns into extensive Bushveld
with most of the major Game Parks to be found here.

Hiking trails can be found throughout Mpumalanga province. The forested
areas contain some of the most beautiful trails in the country as forestry companies such
as Komatiland own vast tracts of land in the mountainous regions. However many of the
trails are also located on private farms such as those in the Carolina area and north of
Middelburg in the Olifants Gorge area. Trails vary in length from day hikes to 5 day
trails such as the Fanie Botha trail that starts in Sabie.
