The Pied Barbet trail is situated in the Rolfontein Nature Reserve in the Vanderkloof dam area of
South Africa's Northern Cape province. The trail is only about 4km long and not difficult at all.
It runs over hills covered in grasses, Sweet Thorn trees, Cabbage trees, Wild Olive trees and
other vegetation, before descending into a shallow dried out stream bed. Before meeting up again
with one of the gravel roads that runs through the reserve, there is a picnic spot on ones right
that is almost hidden from view amongst the trees and shrubs. The trail runs back along the gravel
road to the main entrance gate during which time you may be fortunate enough to see some game in
the veldt, such as Red hartebeest, Black wildebeest, Springbok, or Zebra.

For those that enjoy a stroll in the bush, the Pied Barbet trail offers a lovely opportunity to
experience the bush in this part of South Africa. We did not see any large animals but plenty of
birds along the way, so for the avid birder this is also an interesting opportunity to discover
something new.
