South Africa's Northern Cape province is also its largest and most arid.
It includes areas such as the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, parts of the Great Karoo,
Namaqualand, the Richtersveld, and parts of the country's west coast region. These kind
of landscapes makes for a very different kind of hiking and backpacking experience. The
scenery, as well as the day / night temperatures can change enormously with the seasons and the
rainfall this province gets.

However despite its arid nature, its one of the most interesting provinces
in the country. Once the spring rains have fallen, the area can quickly turn from its
usual brown color to green with a multitude of flowers popping up everywhere. Hiking
trails are mainly limited to nature reserves and game reserves at the moment. These
include trails such as the three day Klipspinger backpacking trail at Augrabies, and
the six day Silver sands Slackpacking trail in the Namaqualand region.
