On the dusty outskirts of the little Northern Cape town of Loeriesfontein, is a very unusual
museum. One of only two wind pump museums in the world, the other being in the U.S, this museum
contains a large variety of wind pumps.
The museum is located on the premises of the little Fred Turner museum in Loeriesfontein. The wind
pump museum was created on the initiative of the late Dr. Walton.
The Fred Turner museum is housed in the old Baptist Church building and is said to contain over
a 1000 items.

The Wind Pump museum was quite interesting. Some of the wind pumps had their gearbox covers
removed allowing for a view of the mechanism inside. The museum sits right on the edge of town
with the Karoo veld right behind it. When the wind blows it can get quite dusty. We could not get
inside the Fred Turner museum. Outside is a board with telephone and cell phone numbers, but
despite calling just about every number on the board, nobody was prepared to open up the museum
for us. It does not seem to have any particular opening times either.
