Hidden in the rolling hills between South Africa's diamond city of Kimberley and Barkly West is a
relic from an ancient past. Approximately 24km west of Kimberley along the R31, turn right onto
the gravel road and follow it for another 8km. You will come across an old abandoned farmhouse to
your right which more or less marks the spot.
Here approximately 250 million years ago, a gigantic glacier slowly moved across this part of
Africa. Underneath the glacier were rocks, stone and gravel which were dragged over lava beds that
themselves are estimated to be about 2500 million years old. This gravel carved deep groves into
this underlying rock. Later the old lava beds were again exposed and the groves can still be
clearly seen today.
