The little village of Nieuwoudtville lies on the R27 approximately 70km west of Calvinia. The
village and surrounding area offer the visitor a suprising number of attractions despite its
remoteness and size.
Officially the village was only founded in 1897, but just on the outskirts are the 200 year old
Groenrivier sandstone ruins from some of the earliest settlers in the area. Accommodation is
plentiful with guest houses, a caravan park, and self catering cottages being available to the
visitor. Nieuwoudtville is famous for its flowers and boasts its own botanical garden at the
Hantam National Botanical Gardens
just outside town.
Approximately 10km to the north of Nieuwoudtville on the R357 towards Loeriesfontein is the
Nieuwoudtville Waterfall Reserve. This reserve contains a very impressive gorge although the
waterfall dropping into the gorge is seasonal. On top just before the waterfall one may find a
whole lot of River Lilies.
