The Spitkop Nature Reserve is situated about 13km north of the city of Upington on the R360 that
leads up to the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park. The reserve covers 5 641 hectares with its main
feature being a rocky outcrop with stairs leading to the top. There is a small telescope on top
for game viewing. There are a number of antilope species here that include Wildebeest, Eland, and
Springbok. Game drives and hiking are two activities that may be enjoyed by tourists and visitors
at the reserve. Accommodation is provided just across from the reserve at Monate Lodge in the form
of chalets and camping facilities.

We camped at Monate Lodge and found the facilities in very good condition. Instead of a game drive
we decided to do a hike through the reserve in order to get a closer look at it. Although they say
there are trails available for hiking we found them to be totally overgrown and hence decided to
rather stick to the gravel roads. A map is provided at reception. The view from the top of the
Spitskop is quite interesting, and as the landscape is so flat one can see for miles. The hike was
pleasant and we did see some game in the distance.
