South Africa's Northern Cape province is its largest and also its most
sparsely populated. It is slightly larger than Germany. Most of it is quite arid
comprising small bushes and acacia trees, but it has a charm all of its own. Its
northern part actually contains part of the Kalahari Desert, while its western side
borders on the Atlantic ocean. Summers can get very hot, sometimes reaching over 40 Celcius
while winter temperatures in areas such as Sutherland may drop to -10 Celcius.

However despite its arid nature, its one of the most interesting provinces
in the country. After the spring rains its Namaqualand region is turned into a
carpet of flowers. Along its west coast are some very interesting fishing villages that
include Hondeklipbaai and Port Nolloth. The area around Kimberley contains numerous
historical sites and battle fields dating from the Anglo Boer War period. Also included
in the province is the Richtersveld and Kalahari Gemsbok Park.
