Calitzdorp is reputedly the area of South Africa that produces the best Port Wines. We can vouch for the quality of their wines! Calitzdorp is a very scenic little town about 50km west of Oudtshoorn along the R62. Many of the various wine estates and farms are such as De Krans and Calitzdorp Kelder are within a short distance of each other and offer wine tasting. The land on which the town is situated dates back to 1821 when it was granted to JJ and MC Calitz from where it eventually took its name from. A walk through parts of the little town is recommended to view some of the historic building.

The variety of wines produced here, and that is not just Ports, is quite amazing! One can walk through some of the vineyards to get a closer look at the whole setup. Try some of the local Ostrich steaks as well, they are really great! The town center boasts a number of interesting historic buildings such as the old Sandstone church dating back to 1912 and built in a neo-Byzantine style with a Marseilles roof. Accommodation is plentiful with a number of Guest Houses, Cottages and Guest Farm's available.
