The Gamkaberg Nature Reserve is situated about 30km west and south of Oudtshoorn on the R62
towards Calitzdorp.
The reserve covers a hilly to mountainous area with some beautiful gorges. It counts the
endangered Cape Mountain Zebra amongst its fauna.
There is a very nice hiking trail that one can do partially as a day hike or 2 day backpack hike.
The possibility also exists to do some Mountain Climbing, Mountain Biking or Kloofing. Picnicking
and camping facilities are also available.
A beautiful secluded tented camp exists that may be rented for that ideal getaway, if one
wants some peace and quite in the bush.

The reserve was virtually deserted when we visited it. It seems not many people know about it or
bother to visit it.
There is a small visitors center where a map of the reserve and trail may be obtained. The camping
site is very basic with virtually no grass. There are however proper ablution facilities.
We decided to walk a stretch of the hiking trail. The trail takes one through some stunning
kloofs. There was still a lot of green vegetation and bush around, and we even found some small
pools of water further into the kloofs.
Along the way back we took a slightly different route to have a look at the Tierkloof bush camp
with its tented chalets. The camp is well hidden in the bush and absolutely first class with all
facilities. There is also a lovely Boma for sitting around the fire in the evenings. The perfect
place for that rustic getaway!
From our point of view, the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve is well worth a visit when in the area.
