The West Coast National Park covers some 35000 hectares and is located close to the major centers
of Saldanha and Langebaan. It borders Yzerfontein in the south and also includes the village of
Churchhaven along its long peninsula.
The Lagoon is home to thousands of seabirds that can be found on its many islands. The park is
particularly attractive during the months of August and September when one can usually see
many of the wild flowers that are found here, and seems to coincide with the Namaqualand flower
season. There is a very interesting boardwalk leading from the visitors center across an area
that is normally underwater during high tide to the edge of the Lagoon. The park contains two
picnic sites which are located at Tsaarsbank and Kraalbaai. There are also Hiking Trails,
Mountain Biking and Cycling Trails available to visitors of the park. During the months of
August through to November, there is a chance of seeing whales from Tsaarsbak.

The months of August - September, especially after the first spring rains, seem to be the best time
to visit the park. The wild flowers are quite beautiful, and the Langebaan Lagoon shoreline at low
tide exposes some interesting creatures and patterns in the sea grass which one can view from the
boardwalk. The Geelbek House, which dates back to 1744 and is in the old Cape Dutch style, houses
a lovely restaurant as well as the parks visitor center. The parks close location to Cape Town,
which is only 100km south, makes it an ideal getaway.
