The Western Cape province is South Africa's oldest from a white settlement
point of view. The Cape of Good Hope was first discovered in 1488 and permanently
settled in 1652. It varies from a semi arid Karoo landscape to thick indigenous forests
along its southern coast. Several mountain ranges are contained within its borders that
include the Swartberg, Cederberg, and Outeniqua Mountains. Extremes of heat and cold are
common inland, but rare near the coast.
